UK roads benefit from £25 billion infrastructure boost

This week, Chancellor Sajid Javid announced the first phase of the Government’s £25bn infrastructure delivery plan.

The package will include fourteen new local road schemes, a £220m scheme to transform bus services, and new plans to invest £5 billion to support the roll-out of internet networks across the country.

Five of the fourteen road schemes have been announced to date:

• A66 Trans Pennine express way (see Glenigan project ID 17343745)
  This scheme comprises the upgrading of the A66, creating a 50-mile east-west trunk road connecting the A1 and the M6 just above the Yorkshire Dales National Park. The 18 miles that remain single carriageway is to be widened to dual carriageway.
• A46 Newark Bypass (see Glenigan project ID 19342016)
  This scheme comprises upgrading and new works for the A46 Newark Bypass.
• M60 Simister Island (see Glenigan project ID 19342018)
  This scheme comprises improvements to the M60 Simister Island Interchange. Simister Island is situated at junction 18 of the M60, junction 18 of the M62 and junction 4 of the M66 and forms the north eastern corner of the M60 Manchester Outer Ring Road.
• A428 Cambridge expressway (see Glenigan project ID 16436326)
  This £3.5bn scheme will connect the two major university cities, Oxford and Cambridge. It will run between the A34 near Oxford and the A14 near Cambridge, via (or near) Milton Keynes. Works will include a three-tier junction at the Black Cat roundabout in Bedfordshire, which will link via the new dual carriageway to the Caxton Gibbet roundabout near Cambourne in Cambridgeshire, with a new junction at Cambridge road and new bridges. The existing A428 will become a local road between St Neots and Caxton Gibbet.
• A12 Widening (see Glenigan project ID 14433556)
  This scheme is for the widening of the A12 between junction 19 (Chelmsford) and junction 25 (A120 interchange).
