Kier wins £18m Kent Uni library refurb

Kier has been awarded the £18m contract to extend and refurbish Kent University's library in Canterbury. The project will involve a 5,200 sq m, five-storey extension to the Templeman Library, which first opened in 1965. Within the extension there will be reading areas, an exhibition space, a 250-seat lecture theatre and a climate-controlled basement. Kier will also refurbish internal areas of the original building to create a bright environment with views of Canterbury. Main works are planned for completion by the end of 2015.

Shepherd lands £16m Leeds library deal

Shepherd Construction has won a £16m contract to build a new library for the University of Leeds. The new library will provide 1,000 reader seats, flexible training rooms, community classrooms and a café. It will also deliver an IT-rich space for students and flexible space for 6,800 metres of book stock.The new library is due for completion at the beginning of 2015 and is the first city-fronting building that the university has commissioned for over 30 years.

Amey bags delayed £200m Area 6 highways deal

The Highways Agency has finally let the delayed Area 6 asset support contract to Amey. The contract valued at between £30m and £40m per year will involve maintaining and improving 609 miles of motorways and major ‘A’ roads in parts of Cambridgeshire, Peterborough, Essex, Suffolk and Norfolk. Amey will start work from 1 April rather than September 2013 as had originally been planned before the decision to move to negotiated procedure following initial tender returns.

John Sisk to build Igloo scheme in North London

Urban regeneration specialist Igloo has secured planning permission to build a new £10m mixed use scheme on the Caledonian Road in north London. John Sisk is believed to be lined-up as main contractor on the job which will contain 25 low energy homes and 4,500 sq ft of office and retail/studio space. Construction work is due to start shortly, and the site is due to complete in September 2014.
